This is not ragebait or anything like that but rather just a genuine question. Why would someone share what they learned and risk it becoming popular, thus losing all the advantages of being one of the first to know about it ?
I think there should be a negative correlation between the risk of something and how much it should be gatekept. The riskier something is the least it should be gatekept, because even if it becomes mainstream most people still won't do it because of the inherit risk. On the other hand, if something is highly benefitial and carries close to no side effects it should definitely be gatekept. In this second scenario the only thing stopping people from doing that specific thing would be their ignorance of it, not inhibition or fear.
