Why shouldn't the EU have a united millitary ?

Or atleast some kind of contract, that makes it so all other EU nations have to interfere when one of them gets attcked. We wouldn't be dependent on the US anymore and also could hold out/support the US in a War against China or Russis.
So is there an actual reason why many are against it ?
