I was watching this Japanese netflix
With subtitles a while back. The guy didn't look japanese. He looked mixed. While I don't understand or speak Japanese I could tell he hard some weird slang. When I looked it up. He was 100% Japanese but then learned about the Ryukyuans.
These people has their seperate kingdom in the Ryukyu Islands. They had their own culture, their own language and also looked different to Japanese. Before getting bulldozed and conquered by imperial Japan. Japan wasn't always a homogeneous society. They just best everyone down to accept their culture and renamed the entire area to Okinawa.
Ryukyuans like the Ainu in the north have alo retained a significantly higher percentage of DNA from the indigenous Jomon hunter-gatherers. And hence also look different. They are generally much darker skinned, deep set eyes, thick facial hair, more caucasian leaning bone structure than regular japs. Some of them can pass as mixed race due to this
