Well, usually when people refer to Africans, they'll refer to them by their African nationality (e.g. he's South African or she's Somali), unless that's unknown. This would be the case for AAs, as they came from a bunch of countries, intermingled and few would know exactly which.
Centuries of slavery have pretty much developed a unique AA phenotype, which does differ somewhat from those without a slavery background.

most of the pale people in america think they're from england and germany, in reality their ancestors are from those countries but not native to them, a lot of americans are balkanoid immigrant mutts, I've had a few friends who had their DNA tested confirm this.

also afro-americans are almost entirely from one region in africa, so whilst africa as a whole is very diverse, they aren't, they're mostly from the senegal and gambia area.
