Looksmaxxing is a process that increases in relevance when the God Hypothesis is disregarded. Nietzche's statement "God is dead" encapsulates this perfectly.

When God as a socio-moral icon dies out and the idea of eternal life with it, the relevance of mortal life increases in value. Compelling people to maximize the pleasure of their experience right now, something that is intertied with your appearance. Therefore, a lack of belief in god increases your motivation to work on your appearance.

Moral frameworks created by major religions work against the maximization of looks as it breeds mediocrity instead of compelling greatness.

This makes sense, because religion (like a meme) spreads the most when it appeals to a higher amount of people. Through a drawin-esque manner, religions who promote ideas such as "the meek shall inherit the world" and other copes will prevail and exist for longer.

The idea that the spirit is of higher value than the physical body is also another neat little thing that undermines looksmaxxing. The needs of the physical body is quite literally placed at odds with the spiritual one, through abstinence and fasting.

Now on a bit of a sidenote: The idea that marriage is between one man and one woman is also another ideal that religion pushes that undermines the pursuit of looksmaxxing

Now, this idea does not necessarily exist only because of religion. There are actual evolutionary benefits to maintaining a monogamous marriage, furthermore societies who guarantee that men can have partners tend to exist for longer because biological impulses are pacified.

But the difference here is that the definition of marriage is now extended to the hands of an infallible entity rather than cultural norms. Not to mention, most pre-Christain faiths actually allowed for polygamy to take place.
