I think the West is currently in a long-term civilizational decline, not in the sense of some sudden collapse, but in the sense that the cultural and structural foundations that originally created Western civilization are slowly eroding.
One of the main reasons for this is that every civilization ultimately depends on a “supporting class” that upholds its institutions, values and worldview. In the modern West, this role was largely played by the post-war liberal-boomer generations. But those generations are aging out of power and are increasingly being replaced by a new elite class made up largely of young highly educated women who already dominate many cultural and institutional centers such as media, universities, administration and HR structures.
As this shift happens, the value system of the West changes as well. Modern Western society is no longer fundamentally organized around competition, achievement, expansion, risk-taking or physical capability. Instead, it is increasingly organized around moral legitimacy, emotional sensitivity, social management, safetyism and symbolic politics. In many ways, the West has transformed from a civilization driven by “warrior values” into one driven by what could be described as a therapeutic-priestly mindset.
One thing I find particularly noticeable is that modern Western systems rarely solve problems in a practical sense anymore. Instead, they tend to moralize, psychologize or symbolically manage them. Conflict itself is treated as something inherently illegitimate that must always be neutralized rather than something natural and unavoidable within human societies.
The consequence is that the West gradually loses many of the traits that historically allowed civilizations to survive and expand: ambition, competitiveness, willingness to sacrifice, cultural confidence, demographic vitality and even the instinct for self-preservation.
I also think this is deeply connected to the modern crisis surrounding men, relationships and identity. Contemporary society dismantles many traditional structures and roles but fails to replace them with anything stable. Men increasingly lack direction, purpose and social grounding, while values and behavioral norms associated with feminine social preferences become generalized across the entire culture.
To me, late Western society increasingly resembles the late Roman Empire: highly sophisticated and wealthy on the surface, but internally exhausted, overly moralized, risk-averse and detached from the forces that originally created its power. Comfort replaces expansion, administration replaces vitality and symbolic virtue replaces competence.
What makes this especially significant is that I do not think this process is reversible in the short term. The ruling institutions themselves are staffed by the very groups and ideologies that benefit from maintaining the current moral framework, so the system struggles to correct its own trajectory.
I also do not think the result will be some dramatic overnight apocalypse. More likely, the West will experience decades of gradual weakening: demographic decline, cultural fragmentation, political instability, declining social trust, economic stagnation and reduced capacity for collective action.
Eventually, I believe a new civilizational order will emerge from this process, one that is likely to place greater emphasis again on hierarchy, strength, collective identity, discipline and self-assertion. History tends to move in cycles, and civilizations that lose the ability to defend and reproduce themselves are eventually replaced by ones that still possess those instincts.
