Why were ww2 soldiers such moggers?

Whenever I watch ww2 footage most of the soldiers I see are above average with a large amount of CL and even chads I know that they were probably over representated in marches and propaganda but still even in random footage they seem like such moggers, particularly German and English soldiers.
