I am writing this from my own experience of talking to women, listening to their gossip, and studying female social dynamics and intrasexual competition.
Average women know that they are average. They also know that beauty has its benefits which they will never enjoy because they ain't pretty. So average (or below) women collectivepy cope in two ways:
1. By acting like looks ain't important, and highlighting other qualities like personality and heart, etc.
2. By constantly gassing each other up and repeating that all women are beautiful.
Both of these tactics are used to "level the playing field". By making people believe that looks ain't important or that everyone has good looks, average women hope to get their desirable man with their other qualities (like personality) which they are promoting.
So when men try to convince women that looks are important, most of them deny it because if they admit so, they will have to face the fact that their own looks also matter, and accept that they aren't beautiful and undeserving of the Chad they're chasing.
In other words, when women tell men to stop caring about looks and focus on personality, they are not even thinking about men. They're thinking about themselves.
Nuance:
Average (or below) men also do this. This process is unconscious.
