thats not the only reason they died but it was the most common one. infants have a very weak immune system so giving birth to a baby in the wrong spot could kill them instantly from infections or very cold / hot enviroment, and if a mother didnt get enough nutrients from food the baby wouldnt get nutrients either and they didnt have medacine or anythign so the babies just died.
