People love to say things like:
"Bro I actually look better irl its just the camera"
This usually gets immedietly checked off as pure cope but there may actually be some truth to it.
So the common argument to support this is lens distortion. However there is more nuance to it. Obviously the lens distorts your image. But that does not automatically mean you look worse!
Lets take somebody with a long face, high esr, high pfl, wide mouth and nose.
He is going to looks much worse with lens distortion since with distortion the outer more backwards parts of the face become smaller and the middle of the face bigger meaning longer face (zygos are out and backwards, while chin and midfaceare "infront" and in the middle), higher esr (zygos are out and back, interpupilarry is middle and infront)... . So the flaws become worse
Now lets look at somebody with the "opposite face", so wide face, low esr, low pfl...
He is going to look much better with distortion because all of his measurements become better: less wide face (zygos are out and behind, midface length in thr front and middle), esr becomes wider ( zygos are out and behind, interpupilarry middle and front)...
And now we know the statistics indicate equal deviation from the ideal to both ends. So the average measurement is the ideal one.
And this means on average distortion (in normal amounts) neither benefits nor harms looks (since most images, where ones looks are in consideration have non extreme amounts of distortion)
Now here is why you actually kind of looks better in irl than on camera:
Social media and digitalisation
On here most people you see/ most of the times you see people they are posting pics where they look good and most of the times you see good looking people, bc good looks are of course a big factor for getting cloud and attention online.
So when you compare a picture of an average looking person to the average picture of a person you see online the first is going to get outshined by the other.
Now irl you see everybody how they are and don't see more attractive people than average (on average).
So you actually are more attractive than what you see irl moreso than online!

Lens distortion isn't cope. But It's rather beneficial for wide-facecels like me
On average for non extreme distortion it pretty much is, but I just titled it like that to make the spoiler title short

lens distortion isn’t all that cope but i find that that’s not the main driver
what you said is def true but it’s also cause phone cameras don’t pick up details like eyelashes, skin, hair etc, it just looks blunt

Yes, the point wasn't to say that its cope from individual to individual, but for the average of a big group. Obv it changes hoe you look for the better or worse depending on your soecific features

My theory is it has something to do with your brain processing moving vs non-moving faces as well, like i notice when i watch some movie and there's some girl that's hot and i search her up on google later and she becomes mid for some reason
