In photos who is taller is very obvious, you subconsciously just look at the tops of peoples heads, however in real life it’s not as simple because of shit like perspective it’s a lot harder to tell who’s taller. So, you look at someone’s eye level.
If their eye level is higher than yours then you assume they’re taller, however your eye level can vary by about 3 inches depending on your posture.
this can lead to the perception you’re shorter than you are, also you’re probably not measuring yourself correctly and are actually 2 inches shorter than you think.
