Braces, elastics + fixed retainers in early puberty messed up my entire body mechanics and alignment. The upper left quadrant of the metal wire retainer broke off a decade ago and never got fixed or removed altogether, which caused my teeth to shift, so my bite doesn’t fit anymore and my left TMJ is compressed.

I have compressed nerves in my jaw, neck and spine that affect me from head to toe, due to the misaligned bite. Symptoms include constant TMJ issues and facial tension/pain, cervical instability, poor gait and posture, tingling sensations, impaired speech, digestion and diaphragmatic function, ringing in the ears, muscle cramps, twitching and excessive tension.

My theory is they overcorrected my overjet and slapped these fixed retainers on, which didn’t allow my bite to catch up with my jaw that was still growing at least up until my late teens. Perhaps the damage would’ve been less severe if they had prescribed removable retainers or none at all. Either way, I gotta save up to get my bite and the associated problems fixed.
