if the lower jaw follows the upper than based off that my lower should widen right? and what about my ramus

Yes, the lower jaw can widen following upper jaw expansion. Several studies have demonstrated that rapid maxillary expansion (RME) leads to an increase in mandibular width:

  • Research has shown a significant increase in the lower intermolar width (+1.62 mm) and intercanine width (+1.28 mm) following RME treatment4.
  • Studies confirm that RME is a reliable orthodontic device not only for correcting upper jaw constriction but also for improving transverse dimensions in both upper and lower arches4.
  • When the maxilla is narrow, the mandibular teeth often tip inward to compensate. When these lower teeth are properly aligned after expansion, the width deficiency becomes more pronounced, necessitating expansion8.

  • Effects on Jaw Position and Symmetry

The expansion of the upper jaw can affect the positioning of the lower jaw:
    • After expansion, the lower jaw will naturally swing back to a more central and symmetrical position58.
    • In cases of mandibular asymmetry caused by a narrow upper jaw, expansion can help reposition the mandible more symmetrically8.
    • Without early treatment, asymmetry can become a permanent facial feature, but with proper expansion, the mandible repositions in a more balanced way8.
  • Effects on Ramus Height

None of the search results specifically mention an increase in ramus height as a direct effect of palatal expansion. The changes described primarily relate to width and positioning rather than vertical dimensions of the ramus.

The main effects of palatal expanders include:
    • Widening the upper jaw and dental arch
    • Improving jaw alignment and facial symmetry
    • Potentially increasing lower jaw width as a secondary effect
    • Enhancing nasal breathing and airway passages
  • While palatal expanders can have significant effects on dental and skeletal structures, they do not appear to directly increase ramus height based on the available information.

  • chatgpt btw if it isnt obvious lol
