It was the world's most connected country, contested only by countries such as Switzerland, Finland and Singapore. What do i mean? For one thing, the Yugoslavian passport was the only one in history able to get you into both side's (Capitalist or Communist) countries without any problems.
At one point Yugoslavia had defensive assurances from both the USA and the USSR. Meaning that if the USSR invaded the USA promised to defend Yugoslavia, and if the USA attacked the USSR would fight with Yugoslavia.
She was also economically strong. Yugoslavia had the greatest per capita GDP of all the Communist nations, and the third largest Communist economy behind China and Russia.
In the 1970s, a US army report stated that Yugoslavia had the 4th largest infantry force in Europe, and the 6th largest air force and 5th largest tank force.
