Getting her is an initial step in your evolution and then you have the motivation to strive to be ambitious and make your mark on the world. But when you fail at that step you have no motivation to keep going. The clouds just thicken and the light disappears. You know you're a genetic failure and so there's no real point in trying to further species, you're not even part of it any more.
