Even living in Iraq I used to believe the media that women are "oppressed" Here in Iraq but now after going out more and talking with more people I noticed some stuff the average girl here in Iraq has a better life than the average like when I go out to any good part of the city for entertainment the vast majority of the people I see are women the only places you find more men in are the shit parts that people go too for jobs like local markets and shit second most of the good comfortable jobs will hire women before men even if the man had the same or better qualifications just because they are women third women can just quit not study not plan on getting a job and still is able to live a normal life by just getting married to a guy that will have to spend money on her women have on average a more comfortable life than men here imo the only reason people think women are "oppressed" Here is because of the few shitty cases that happen and get media coverage of horrible crimes like honor killing that are not common at all here second a lot of social norms placed on women like they are expected to not wear any reveling clothing or do a lot of stuff that are seen as inappropriate here and there isn't anything wrong with that imo.

Tldr -> on average women have a more comfortable life than men here and women think they are oppressed because of some social norms and media coverage of horrible crimes against women.
