I remember when I went to the endocrinologist to check my height and growth plates. At first it was the usual stuff: x-rays, standing against the stadiometer, waiting in the room like any normal appointment. But I was more nervous than I’ve ever been in my life. The entire time I kept praying for one thing in my head: please let me just be a late bloomer. Please tell me I still have time.
Then she finally came back in.
I wish she never did.
She sat down and told me my growth plates were completely closed. Completely closed. I swear in that moment I felt my chest drop. It felt like reality just hit me all at once. I sat there thinking: how is this even possible? She told me I had early puberty and that I didn’t do anything wrong, that it was genetics and there was nothing I could’ve done.
Nothing.
She asked if I wanted to come look at the x-ray and started pointing at signs on my bones showing they were closed, but I wasn’t even listening anymore. I couldn’t hear a word she was saying. All I could think about was: my own body really betrayed me. My genetics already decided something this big before I even understood life
And then it hit me:
“I’m actually gonna be 5’0 forever?”
I’m 14.
Fourteen.
People are still telling me “you’ll grow bro” while I’m sitting there getting told the exact opposite by an actual doctor. I felt like crying right there but my mom was next to me and I couldn’t let her see me like that. My eyes got watery and she asked what was wrong. I lied and said something got in my eye because how do you even explain that feeling?
How do you explain realizing a door you thought was still open quietly closed years ago?
And what made it hurt even more was realizing where I probably got it from. My mom is around my height too, and in that moment I couldn’t help but feeling angry at everything: my body, life, genetics, all of it.
Ever since then I can’t stop thinking about it. Am I always gonna be treated like some harmless little kid? Some puppy people think is cute but never actually respect? Sometimes I genuinely wonder if people even see me as human or if they just see me as… less.
