Would certain “looksmaxing” methods just make you look worse?

The procedure in question is a palate expander, I wanna get one in fact I could, but at the same I don’t think I really need one and if I was to get it would make my face look worse. Is there any real scenarios where doing something with the thoughts of ascending actually ended up making you look uglier?? If so let me know
