I, in all honesty, don't really experience romance, but I think from an outside perspective, a less attractive partner would be better. Some people need a sense of security in their happy place (partner); it makes sense to want to look better than your partner. I also think that if you are better looking than your partner, your partner will be more subconsciously grateful towards you and will probably experience a much stronger amount of attraction to you.
