Lol, there's an interesting though kinda baffling episode of Amazing Stories, called Gather Ye Acorns that shows exactly this:
- a kid is visited one day by a leprechaun who tells him to follow his passions and not listen to his parents who want him to study hard to become a doctor or lawyer.
- the kid collects toys, comics and other useless crap, refuses to study or work, is eventually kicked out of the house by his parents and becomes a bum, living in his car on the streets for more than 50 years.
- one day he decides to commit suicide thinking the leprechaun somehow tricked him, but at a gas station some people are amazed by his collection of vintage toys and comics who are apparently really rare and valuable.
- he organizes an auction and gets for them dozens of millions of dollars, and he's now finally rich and happy, though old...was all of this actually worth it in the end????
