My uncle recently reached out to me. The same millionaire uncle that lives in Chicago

Thread 'My uncle's american dream' https://looksmax.org/threads/my-uncles-american-dream.1305220/

I kept teasing him about finding me a job at Easter when we met and after months he reached out a few days back. Apparently his close friend has a startup setup in downtown Chicago. And he went ahead and sent them my resume and my LinkedIn profile. They quite liked my work and my uncle messaged me asking which role I wanted so he can arrange a call on Google meet tomorrow to move things further if I was interested.

Would you consider this nepotism? I would technically be an internal hire if I accepted this but my uncle told me all this is very common in america. Referrals is how people get hired and he told I've already proven competence because I've scored roles entirely on my own and worked at large firms anyway so it doesn't matter but this kind of red carpet welcome is also not something I'm used to.

Yes, and that's okay. Use every "unfair" advantage you have at your disposal. Would be a waste of opportunity if you didn't

no i wouldn't say so since nepotism is favoritism towards family so if they hired you just cus you were related to your uncle then yeah but you said
They quite liked my work
so i would say you got lucky with connections and landed a job that way

Nepotism isnt inherently bad if your capable and good for the job then it would still be considered Nepotism but wanting good for your family isnt bad it would be diffrent if you were garbage at the job and he only hires you cause your related but if your good at it there isnt a problem

Nepotism definiton: the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by giving them jobs.

Nepotism is when you’re handed out roles just because you’re someone’s son or whatever, even if you lack the qualities. Now if you’re qualified for the job then it’s not nepotism. In my opinion.

Nah nepo is more if they make a fake job for you to do, you are just someone they know better and can hence rely on more likely to do the real job that needs to be done

It is nepotism but it’s not necessarily bad. You have a connection through your uncle which you should take advantage of. You still have to do the work it’s not like you’re gonna get paid for doing nothing.

Yes but not bad its just the way the world works. Linkedin is basically nepotism too except its connections of colleagues. I can understand because sometimes its better to hire someone you know than someone who is has "experience" and degrees because none of it may be relevant on a day-to-day basis. You have more certainty the person is fit for the role. You can interview all you want and find the most educated person still not a guarantee what you expect unlike the person you know.

Basically, this, but your resume was good anyway @Jason Voorhees . Recommendations is how a lot of people get cozy jobs at big companies.
