I kept teasing him about finding me a job at Easter when we met and after months he reached out a few days back. Apparently his close friend has a startup setup in downtown Chicago. And he went ahead and sent them my resume and my LinkedIn profile. They quite liked my work and my uncle messaged me asking which role I wanted so he can arrange a call on Google meet tomorrow to move things further if I was interested.

Would you consider this nepotism? I would technically be an internal hire if I accepted this but my uncle told me all this is very common in america. Referrals is how people get hired and he told I've already proven competence because I've scored roles entirely on my own and worked at large firms anyway so it doesn't matter but this kind of red carpet welcome is also not something I'm used to.

Nepotism isnt inherently bad if your capable and good for the job then it would still be considered Nepotism but wanting good for your family isnt bad it would be diffrent if you were garbage at the job and he only hires you cause your related but if your good at it there isnt a problem

It is nepotism but it’s not necessarily bad. You have a connection through your uncle which you should take advantage of. You still have to do the work it’s not like you’re gonna get paid for doing nothing.

You have more certainty the person is fit for the role. You can interview all you want and find the most educated person still not a guarantee what you expect unlike the person you know.
