Yeah but closer in absolute terms isn't relevant. All Europeans share ancestry from the same ancestral groups (WHG, EEF, AND WSH) and this gives us all similar phenotypic traits especially in terms of development. So it's just about having a lot of traits that overlap in frequency.

I do agree there is clinal variation in terms of say Southern Europeans having higher melanin because they live in a hotter climate, but that is superficial compared to a sharing the same ancestral pool.

Now what does get vague is when populations are mixed. That I agree gets much more subjective. Especially when individual dominant traits like skin color are more fixated on when polygenic traits will be mixed generally proportionally. So a half white half black looks more black but everything else will be evenly mixed, but no one would call them white, plenty would call them black though.
