Being at ground zero of a nuke is the best possible place you could be in that event, being reduced to a shadow before your nervous system can register anything is ideal. Even if you had a farm, cows, pigs, and grew your own food, it still wouldn’t make you self sustaining today. Modern farming itself depends on a huge industrial system fuel, fertilizers, machinery, spare parts, medicine, and electricity.

I think the issue with a viral attack is the unknown. Radiation sickness via a fallout could be arguably the worst thing to happen, hair, teeth, and skin would rapidly decompose, and your cells would deteriorate faster than they could regenerate. You'd essentially become a zombie until you die, and that has been studied. On the other hand, a virus from an unknown source (dirt sample from Mars, viruses stuck in permafrost, or any sort of alien organisms) could be far worse and we just don't know it yet.
