Pretty much for our final it was an FRQ based around the theme of some fuckass book we’ve been reading called black boy where some black guy recalls his life story growing up in the south at peak KKK times (like early/early-mid 20th century) and wants to be a writer just a bunch of yap
anyways before I get to the real sauce, pretty much what you can take from ts is he wants to be a writer but obviously he’s black so there’s hella extreme barriers preventing him from doing so
the FRQ question was smth like “how much can your personal determination overcome systemic barriers in the pursuit of success”
pretty much it was ap lang rubric for argumentative essay so we had to bring up outside info and OH BOY did i bring up a lot
pretty much i yapped about wtv made my points but for my counterclaim i instantly brought up lebron and some other random people (doesn’t matter) who beat poverty.
I then DESTROYED the claim by saying that they only were able to escape due to outside factors like lebron being 6’7 in highschool and how he’s a generic anomaly how life is unfair how some people are ugly how some are short how some genetically have no real talent which prevents them from beating “systemic barriers”
But here’s the kicker, I have no clue if my english teacher (she’s like 29) ascended growing up, but she is like a true white HTB, honestly could’ve been SL in her prime, aged pretty well, anyways she left extra comments saying she emphasized with the points I made and understood some people have disadvantages BEYOND where they live and how most stories of people escaping poverty like this are only the 1%
This also brought my grade from a B to an a-, genuinely the first time knowing about lookism has directly benefitted me academically, anyways time for tldr
TLDR; wrote my ap lang final on how determination isn’t enough without luck, looks, or support. dropped lookism in the counterclaim. htb teacher agreed. grade went from B to A- bc of extra credit JFLLLLL
