when ur country gets nuked, u must replace the prior infrastructure, so i assume they did the mature thing of modernising the prior infrastructure that was there for starters. also now became a US puppet state in effect, so they benefited from their markets and hence war machine.

i think it stopped growing simply bc of the birth rates being so low. japan had bad deflation at one point but i seriously doubt it contributed as much as less workers did. soon after the war, there was a lot of newly working age men whose fathers had died in the war. its a strong incentive to work.

Afaik the Plaza Accord increased the value of the Yen to the USD, increasing the cost of export products, meanwhile other Asian countries became more attractive for outsourced manufacturing, while Japanese companies stagnated, both in R&D and growth
Their asset bubble burst in 1989-1991, and they've struggled to recover since, despite lowering interest rates down to near 0 percentages in the early 2000s and up to today, making credit almost free. They expected this to revive growth, but it's only lead to the debt snowball growing even larger. Meanwhile companies that should've gone bankrupt have stuck around because of the low interest rates, in theory it sounds great, but when a company is only afloat because of a low interest rate, it's unlikely to grow or innovate.
Today the Japanese stock index has shown little growth since 1989 (functionally negative when considering inflation), while the birthrate and population stagnates too, everything outside of Tokyo is pretty much stagnant, while large companies like Sony outsource most of their own manufacturing to other Asian countries.
This could've probably been prevented if they'd raised the interest rates 20 years ago and let the economy crash properly instead of keeping borderline insolvent companies on life support.
