YAHWEH appeared to people in the Old Testament as the Angel of The LORD.

There was an Angel in the Tanakh. Throughout it Who was bowed to. Called YHWH. Referred to as GOD. Called Himself GOD. And had the power to forgive sins.

This was none other than the Angel of YHWH.

Can God appear to men? God is Spirit. He would send His Word in a human spirtual body to speak to Moses and Lot and others. And lead the Israelites in the wilderness as well.

He also utterly slaughtered the entire invading force of the Assyrians when they tried to take over Jerusalem. To this day, historians and archeologists are puzzled on why the current Assyrian leader did not mention Jerusalem as one of the many cities conquered of Israel during his conquest. Because he had a stone and on it the names of the cities he conquered and Jerusalem is unlisted.
