Y’all don’t know what poverty looks like until you’ve seen it

I grew up around upper class neighbourhoods in tier 1 cities in India. Hyderabad and Bengaluru so I lived a very sheltered life. Even the people who came to work in our house were relatively secure the housemaids, servents, drivers they all lived an okaish life. They had wages, some choice of employer, and enough agency that they were not trapped in the household but when I was in the cadet corp. I was posted to a camp in interior rural Punjab near Kapurthala. There I saw how harsh life still is for the rural poor. Power cuts almost everyday. Many Dalit families lived as attached or debt bound labourers. literal bonded slaves who were landless and forced to be working in landlords fields and cattle sheds in housing and conditions below anything I had ever known. Even the lowest wage earners I had seen before were living a more dignified life and in better conditions than whatever this was. That was when I realized how bad the conditions are for some people in this land. All my life I just heard about this kind of poverty but I saw it fr with my own eyes for the first time in my life and that image has stayed with me ever since.

Meh south delhi is expensive but city centers in major european cities, Bay area, NYC are even more unattainable. Even multi millionaire is middle class in those places

I once went to Bihar and there were so many homeless poor people. I thought I’d seen poor people in New Zealand but in India it was completely different. I literally saw peopl living in shacks made of dirt walls with no lighting inside I didn’t know people still lived like that in the 21st century.
I also saw a lot of brown haired Indians. I thought it was cool since I’d never seen an Indian with any color hair except super dark brown. Turns out they just didn’t have access to clean water and so hadn’t showered in so land their hair turned brown and muddy
It put a lot of things into perspective for me

India's gotta be pretty bad. Here in Cambodia they're poor. Families of six even, living under a piece of plastic tied to a tree under the sidewalk type shit. But they're pretty lazy. Work ethic is definitely not the same over here.

Indians and Chinese seem more similar as far as work. Very different from South east Asians.
