Yes, Judas has betrayed Jesus, but… the betrayal and money was not his point, not his goal. He truly believed in Jesus as the Messiah, but his understanding was political. To him Jesus was meant to bo be an earthly king too, king who will save the people from Roman tyranny. So he wanted to push Jesus to the verge, that Jesus would be forced to show his real divine power against Roman Empire (as God has done it once in Egypt?). He was so sure about this vision that he has commited his part in the play. In his mind, even Jesus himself has assured him and encouraged to do so: “What you are about to do, do quickly.” To his horror and despair the plan has failed, he has failed; Jesus was crucified, Jesus has died in the worst shameful way. So in utter, bottomless despair, Judas committed suicide.
