You are uglier than you might think
(This wont be for everyone)
Studies show that people find themselves more attractive than others do, in a study done in 2008 (Cited below), people were drawn to digitally morphed versions of their faces, and found that people overall rated their own attractiveness higher than others rated them
"Its called confidence!!!!!" Nope, its called cope.
In the study, research found that the attractive people tended to rate themselves lower than others or "Under rate" themselves. The study also found that less attractive people were more likely to compare themselves to other unattractive people, while attractive people compared themselves to attractive ones.
"rating less attractive faces more generously than others do" This is called pity, they feel bad for the person so they lie about their appearance to make them feel better WOMEN DO THIS ALL THE TIME
Adding onto my point, people favored morphed versions of their own faces, and people picked a version of a friend that was at least 10% more attractive than the real photo.
People also protect their self image by shunning away bad photos while crediting good ones.
The average rating has INCREASED????
People have a well documented tendency to rate themselves as better than the average person, aka better than average effect.
A 2020 meta analysis in Psychological Bulletin took data from 124 articles, 291 samples, and more than 950,000 people, and found a habit for people to see their abilities, attributes, and personality traits as superior to those of the average person
This is very common, its happened in other studies like Svenson's 1981 driving study, where most drivers rated themselves better than average.
this suggests that self-views are systematically inflated and Greitemeyers attractiveness study suggests the same pattern applies to looks, especially for people that strangers rate as less attractive.
LONG STORY SHORT - PEOPLE RATE THEM SELVES ABOVE AVERAGE
