The last thing he wants to do is to, in trying to defend himself, look like a desperate defamer seeking to maintain an upper hand. If people see him that way, his own efforts will be used to the benefit of his opponent (he'll advertise, and people will see him as a beggar and vote for his opponent instead)

Reminds me of the 2022 Semi-Finals between me and @ReadBooksEveryday.
