Marriage is a bad contract for men and most of you are signing it for a feeling

People talk about marriage like it is love with paperwork. It is not. It is a contract with the state in the middle, and the state wrote it. You do not negotiate the terms. You get the default, and the default is worse for the husband than anyone at the wedding will tell you.

She can leave. You cannot stop her. Every state has no-fault divorce, so she does not need a reason you would recognize. "I don't want this anymore" is enough. Women file most divorces. That is not a vibe. That is the pattern. You can be faithful, employed, and easy to live with, and the contract still ends when she says it ends.

When it ends, the money does not go back to how it was. In a lot of states the house, the savings, and the retirement get cut up because they were "marital," which means anything you earned after the wedding is half hers on the way out. If you have kids, you can also be paying for a house you do not live in, for years, while seeing them on a schedule a court wrote. Alimony is less common than it used to be. Child support is not. Do the math on that before you decide a ceremony is romantic.

What you get for signing is small. A tax break. Hospital access. Inheritance if you die with no will. You can get the hospital part and the inheritance part with documents, without giving somebody a claim on half your life. The tax break is not worth a coin flip on your assets. Run the numbers once, honestly, and the "benefit" of marriage is mostly that your parents and her parents wanted a party.

The other pitch is that married men are happier and live longer. Those studies are mostly "men who were already stable got married," not "the license fixed them." A man with a job, a routine, and someone he actually likes does fine without a clerk. A man who gets married to stop being lonely just moved the loneliness into a more expensive room.

Being against marriage is not the same as being against a woman. Live with someone if you want. Take her to dinner. Build a life. Just do not hand a court the right to split it because you were afraid a girlfriend sounded less serious than a wife. If she needs the wedding to stay, believe her. She is telling you the relationship is a negotiation with an exit she has already priced in.

The only time the contract is rational is narrow. You both actually want kids and you have talked about what happens if it fails. Or she has the money and you would be the one walking away richer, which is rare and you should still read what you are signing. Everything else is a feeling wearing a suit.

You can love somebody and still refuse a deal where she can cancel it alone and you pay for the cancellation. That is not bitterness. That is reading the terms.
