Your chin isn’t recessed, your mandible is

I see people say “my chin is recessed” all the time when that’s not really what’s going on.

Your chin is literally just the front part of your mandible. If your whole lower jaw is sitting back, obviously your chin is gonna look back too. That doesn’t automatically mean you have some isolated recessed chin.

Look at your whole lower jaw from the side.

If your ramus, mandibular body, jaw angle AND chin all look pushed back, that’s more of a mandibular retrusion thing.

If your jaw itself has decent projection but the actual chin is sitting noticeably behind it, THEN you could be dealing more with an isolated chin deficiency.

This matters because the “fix” isn’t necessarily the same.

A chin implant or genioplasty can make the chin stick out more, but it doesn’t move your entire mandible forward. So if the actual issue is your mandible being retruded, you’re basically just adding projection to the very front.

Theoretical fixes

Obviously there’s no magic exercise that’s gonna take a grown mandible and move it forward 15mm.

Stuff like proper tongue posture, nasal breathing and fixing bad head posture can potentially improve how your face functions/looks, especially while you’re still developing, but don’t expect them to completely restructure your jaw.

If you’re still growing, orthodontics/growth modification can sometimes be relevant depending on your bite and skeletal development. That’s something you’d actually have to get assessed for.

For actual structural changes:

Genioplasty = changes the chin.

Chin implant = adds projection to the chin.

Jaw surgery = actually repositions the jaw when there’s a significant skeletal discrepancy.

And no, smashing your jaw with objects isn’t “bone remodeling.” You’re just risking fractures, nerve damage, dental problems and TMJ issues.

Also don’t judge your jaw from one random selfie. Camera distance, lens distortion, head tilt, body fat and even how you’re holding your neck can make your profile look completely different.

So stop automatically calling every weak-looking chin “recessed chin.”

Sometimes the chin isn’t the main problem.

The whole mandible is just sitting back.

I think my jaw is pretty decently projected, my chin is recessed a little, i could probably benefit from fillers.

I do have a short skull tho, it is what it is.
