they probably don’t truly love you and just see you as a source for food + you keep them enclosed in a house all day with minimal exposure to nature. it’s easier for humans to cope with a lack of nature (even though not living in nature is still basically torture for us) but it is amplified by a lot for animals

Brutal justgivemefoodmotherfuckerpill. My uncle has a dog, when I visit him, this rat won't even come to me but when he gave me this dog to take care of him because he went on vacation so I was giving food to that rat sudenly he likes me and even wants me to pet him. Then when he went back to uncle and I visit him again, the rat acts like he doesn't know me. I don't deserve rat's love and I wanted to have wife and normal life - I was crazy as fuck.

They still enjoy your company regardless of if you're going to feed them or not. They also miss people when they die even if their food supply is not compromised, etc.
