- What you need to do a chemical peel
- The procedure
- A deep dive into each chemical peel
- AHA + BHA peels (30% AHA 2% BHA)
- Salicylic acid peels (30% - max used)
- Lactic Acid peels (50-70%)
- Yellow Peel (Retinoid Peels)
- Jessner's peels (14% of each salicylic, lactic and resorcinol)
- Glycolic acid (Will only talk about 70%)
- TCA peels (35% -medium | 50% - deep)
- Glycolic + TCA (40% TCA + 50-70% Glycolic)
- Lower concentration phenol peels (modified versions - around 20-30% phenol to not be as aggressive + different amounts of croton oil contents and formulation)
Later when I talk about peels I will be talking about their strength using levels
Level 1: Superficial
Level 2: Medium
Level 3: Deep
Level 1: Superficial
Level 2: Medium
Level 3: Deep
What are chemical peels and why do we use them?
Chemical peels use acids to cause controlled keratolysis and epidermal injury, accelerating cell turnover and, at higher depths, triggering collagen remodeling in the dermis.
- Treatment of Acne
- Improving skin texture
- Fade pigmentation
- Treat acne scars (only applicable to level 2 and level 3 peels)
- Anti-Aging
What you need to do a chemical peel
- The actual peeling agent
- A gentle cleanser
- Alcohol swab pads
- A mesh gauze pad
- Neutralizing solution (Baking soda mixed with water works) ( For AHA+BHA, Glycolic and Lactic acid peels)
- Barrier care (Moisturizer, Sunscreen, Barrier creams for Level 3, Petroleum jelly)
I will not include the use of topical lidocaine as it creates more risks of not knowing when the peel goes too deep and you feel a burning sensation. If you know the set amount of time that you will use your peal for then use topical lidocaine after doing your own research at your own risk, it can be used before washing your face to make your face numb before sanitization and the appliance of your chemical agent.
The Procedure
A deep dive into each chemical peel
The process of carrying out a chemical peel by yourself can cause multiple side effects like excessive scabbing, dark spots, scars and injury. I am not recommending the use of these peels and am not responsible for any adverse effects cause by these peels
Wash ur face thoroughly with a gentle face wash and go over your face with 2 alcohol swab pads to sanitize your face
After you have prepped your face, apply your peeling agent onto your mesh gauze. Go over your entire face equally with the mesh gauze to complete 1 pass. If you have decided on doing more then 1 pass then reapply your peeling agent onto the mesh gauze and complete 1 more pass where you apply the agent over your whole face equally. Let the peel sit for either the set amount of time or until frosting.
After the peel has ran its course rinse your face and then gently wash for a short period of time with a gentle cleanser. If you are using AHA BHAs, glycolic acid or lactic acid then use one tbsp of baking soda mixed with some water and apply it over your face to neutralize the face. After this apply some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) over your face for a while to speed up recovery.
For all of the peels make sure you use gentle cleansers, moisturize and use sunscreen post peel. For level 3 peels use barrier repair creams or serums and use petroleum jelly slugging during the night. Unless you are using a level 1 peel , avoid strong actives for a week (retinoids, acids, azelaic, hydroquinone etc)
