About 20-25 years ago eveyrone wanted a US greencard but betting a US green card was already a nightmare through work visas or family backlogs, huge waits, strict rules but there was a huge loophole marrying a U.S. citizen was a fast track "immediate relative" category with no quota. So Indian and Hispanic guys often on overstayed visas or just undocumented would straight up do sham marriages with random desperate American women.
I'm not joking when these niggas picked up women from the streets, beggar, single moms hobos, drug addicts, super overweight women basically the undesirable types who'd do it for a few grand in cash. The women got paid, the guy got papers and the guy became American citizen. There were literally agencies set up that specialized in doing this.
The U.S. citizen filed the I-130 petition and almost immediately you get a greencard or if the marriage was less than 2 years old, you'd get a conditional green card. They'd slap together some fake photos, share a mailbox or cheap apartment for show, coach answers for the basic interview (which wasn't super intense back then) and ride it out. Done greencard secured and if that 2 year clause got attached cook up some bullshit story and then divorce the woman and marry someone from back home that now came on the guy's sponsored Visa.
But all these loopholes got patched. marriage based green cards are far stricter and have more scrutiny now. So this method has been patched somewhat but people still do it.
