Up until recently in history the whole notion of drug/alcohol addiction didn't even exist. It was literally made up by the emerging psychological class of doctors. 90% of so called 'addicts' have shit-tier personality and almost no impulse control.
Yes, I get it that physical addiction can make it more painful to stop using a substance. But with the exception of maybe super dangerous shit like heroin it's not some impossible feat. Withdrawal symptoms also only become a problem if you abused the substance in the first place.
Some people are just naturally impulsive and/or have a hard time understanding the consequences of what they are doing. Drug addicts almost always have below average IQ.
