"Chronic alcohol consumption induces adipose tissue atrophy by increasing lipolysis likely via inhibition of insulin-mediated anti-lipolysis. Adipocyte-specific autophagy-deficient mice display impaired adipogenesis resulting in decreased adipose mass, which is similar to chronic alcohol-treated animals. The liver-brain axis can affect drinking behavior via FGF21 signaling, whereas the liver-adipose axis can affect ALD pathogenesis via adipokines. However, many questions remain unanswered, including how chronic alcohol consumption affects autophagy in adipose tissue, whether the p62/SQSTM1 or Pink1-Parkin pathway is involved in alcohol-induced adipose tissue atrophy, and whether FGF21 suppresses autophagy in adipocytes."
