Religion, and really all of them are essentially collections of convictions and beliefs utilized by individuals to fill gaps in human knowledge and comprehension about our meaning in this universe, and the universe as a whole.

It is also a powerful mental tool, for individuals who struggle with coping, to confess problems they are facing in life, in some way transfering the responsibility to something/someone else, like a superior being, a god.
