On September 1, a tropical wave emerged over the far eastern Pacific south of the coasts of El Salvador and Guatemala.[114] A broad area of low pressure formed within it two days later south of the southwestern coast of Mexico.[115] The low became more organized on September 4, a well-defined circulation developed, and a distinct band of deep convection formed around its western half. The NHC classified the system classified as Tropical Depression Eleven‑E at 21:00 UTC that afternoon.[116] The depression strengthened into Tropical Storm Jova early on September 5, with the NHC noting a high likelihood for rapid intensification.[117] Jova was upgraded to a hurricane on September 6, and 18 hours later it reached Category 5 intensity, an increase in wind speeds of 90 mph (150 km/h) in a 24-hour period.[118][119]

As of 9:00 p.m. MDT September 6 (03:00 UTC September 7), Hurricane Jova is located within 20 nautical miles of 15.7°N 113.0°W, about 535 mi (860 km) south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Maximum sustained winds are 160 mph (260 km/h), with gusts up to 195 mph (315 km/h). The minimum barometric pressure is 929 mbar (27.43 inHg), and the system is moving west-northwest at 15 mph (24 km/h). Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 mi (50 km) and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 mi (185 km) from the center.
