Aqualyx article (not mine)

What is Aqualyx?

Aqualyx is a compound solution from the deoxycholate family that has been

physically modified and, by creating a slow release sugar-based system, the

biological half-life is reduced which results in minimal side effects.

When was it developed?

Developed by renowned aesthetic surgeon the late Professor Motolese, Aqualyx

has been available internationally since 2009, and over 2,000,000 vials have

been used for patient treatments in more than 49 countries worldwide.

Professor Motolose developed a technique, for the treatment known as

‘Aqualysis ™’ or ‘Aquaplasty™’ and a

precise protocol is followed. Aqualysis™

or Aquaplasty™ consists of depositing the

solution into localised areas of fat such as

saddle bags, thighs, stomachs, chins and

knees. It can also be used to treat

pseudo-gynocomastia in men. Aqualyx®

liquefies the fat cell, destroying it

permanently, releasing the lipids that are

then eliminated naturally through the

lymphatic system.

How many treatments do clients need?

Typically, two treatments are required for each area being treated; patients

report good tolerance of the treatment.

The treatment will be repeated between two and eight times depending on the

number of small pockets of fat tissue to be reduced. The treatment is repeated

every three to four weeks.

After each treatment patients can expect some swelling, redness and skin

irritation and tenderness in the area treated, which will subside after four to six

days.

Contra-indications for treatment

• Pregnancy and breast feeding or undergoing IVF.

• Severe anaphylactic reactions and allergies

• Auto-immune disease

• Anyone with lipodystrophy, or pathological conditions eg diabetics, liver

or kidney disease.

• Active skin conditions in the area to be treated.

• Acute or chronic skin disease in affected areas

• Area unsuitable for treatment (alternative treatment options can be

recommended)

• Blood thinning medications e.g. warfarin.

• Clients should be over 18 and under the age of 60 years of age.

Ensure your client doesn’t have any forthcoming social engagements so a

personal evaluation can be made as to any possible downtime associated with

the treatment that could impact on their enjoyment of the event. Every

individual can react differently to treatment so it is important to alert your

client.

How does it work?

The human body naturally stores fat in order to supply energy and

subcutaneous fat cells are difficult to diminish. The active substance in Aqualyx

locks into the cell wall making it unstable and releasing the fatty acid that is

stored within it. Cell residue is removed and broken down by the body’s

defences and the released fatty acids are converted to energy.

Local anaesthetic

Aqualyx can either be injected directly form the vial or diluted with a local

anaesthetic. Typically, between 0.2ml and 1ml of Lidocaine 2% is added to the

8mls of Aqualyx.

How to mix with Lidocaine

Draw up 1ml of lidocaine and inject it directly into the 8ml vile of Aqualyx.

8ml vile of Aqualyx and 1ml of 1-2% Lidocaine = 9ml

9ml = 900 insulin units.

Injection technique

It is possible to inject Aqualyx in to the subcutaneous fatty layer of the skin

using 0.5ml or 1ml insulin syringes with needles. This will be demonstrated on

your practical experience in clinic.

Draw up a grid on the body or face, for example 30 boxes

1 VIAL

8ml vial of Aqualyx and 1ml of 1-2% Lidocaine = 9ml

9ml is 900 insulin units

900 insulin units divided between 30 boxes = 30 units per injection.

½ VIAL

450 insulin units divided between 15 boxes = 30 units per injection.

Typical treatments

Although the table below suggests number of vials to be used based on

evidence available, it is suggested that each client is individually assessed and

dosage reflects this.

Area of the body Vials used Number of

sessions

Interval

between

sessions

Head and neck

area (25cm

0.5 1 to 2 4 weeks

Body (100cm

What areas of the body can be treated?

Safely administrated to any localised deposit of fat

• double chin & jowls

• stomach

• waist

• saddle bags

• chest

• hip

• knees

• inner thighs

• upper arms

Protocol

1. Fuck the Consultation

2. Fuck ur clinetCheck that your client is suitable for treatment. Ensure that they fill in,

sign and date the consultation form.

3. Discuss with your client the treatment and what they can expect from

treatment, side effects and aftercare advice.

4. Select the treatment area and clean with a skin antiseptic.

5. Mix Aqualyx with Lidocaine (shown in injection technique)

6. Draw up the solution in clean disposable 0.5 or 1ml insulin syringes.

7. Draw a grid on the selected area and inject.

8. Clean the area after treatment with skin antiseptic.

9. Ensure blood spotting has stopped before the client gets dressed. If

spotting is still visible cover with loose dressing.

10. Give aftercare advice.

Skin Structure

The skin is composed of two major layers: a superficial epidermis and a deeper dermis. The

epidermis consists of several layers. The topmost layer consists of dead cells that shed

periodically and is progressively replaced by cells formed from the basal layer. The dermis

connects the epidermis to the hypodermis, and provides strength and elasticity due to the

presence of collagen and elastin fibres. The hypodermis, deep to the dermis of skin, is the

connective tissue that connects the dermis to underlying structures; it also harbours adipose

tissue for fat storage and protection.

Although you may not typically think of the skin as an organ, it is in fact made of tissues that

work together as a single structure to perform unique and critical functions. The skin and its

accessory structures make up the integumentary system, which provides the body with

overall protection. The skin is made of multiple layers of cells and tissues, which are held to

underlying structures by connective tissue (Figure 1). The deeper layer of skin is well

vascularized (has numerous blood vessels). It also has numerous sensory, and autonomic and

sympathetic nerve fibres ensuring communication to and from the brain.

Aftercare Advice - Aqualyx

Pressure is recommended for the first 48 – 72 hours to help reduce pain in the first 12 hours

and reduce the oedema effect. Lymphatic drainage or massage of the area is also

recommended for 2 to 3 weeks post treatment.

Aqualyx is an injectable solution used to dissolve localised fat deposits in areas such as the

hips, saddle bags, thigh, knees jowls and chin. The body then expels the released fatty acids

naturally.

The number of treatments required varies depending on the thickness of fat to be removed.

Typically 1-3 treatments for small areas (e.g. jowls) and 2-8 treatments for larger areas (e.g.

thighs) at six weekly intervals.

Recovery instructions: After treatment the area may redden and swelling and bruising may

be experienced.

Aqualyx works by causing an inflammatory reaction in the fat cells which can result in

swelling that lasts 3-5 days. This swelling can be obvious when having facial treatments (e.g.

chin). During this time you may want to organise time off work / social engagements.

Swelling can be reduced with the use of a cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth and used for a

maximum of 20 mins. Do not use any anti-inflammatory tablets for 48 hours.

Do not apply make-up or skincare to the treated area for 12 hours - then only use a clean

brush or sponge for application until day five.

Avoid for:

• Three days - extreme temperatures, swimming pools / spas / saunas.

• 10 days - physical exercise.

• 14 days - laser, cryolipolysis or radiofrequency treatments.

Common side effects:

• Red, tight and itchy skin.

• Swelling.

The treated area may feel tender and firm for up to eight weeks after your treatment.

Adverse reaction awareness:

Pain and discharge is not normal. If you experience these please call the clinic immediately

for advice.

Review procedure

All side effects must have fully resolved before a further treatment can be performed. Please

schedule your complimentary review six weeks after your final treatment.
