religion is cope
religion gives people an answer to the biggest fear they have, death, people do not want to believe they simply stop existing, so they believe there is something after life, humans are animals just like every other animal, we have simply evolved further and became smart enough to ask questions about our own existence, that does not mean we are separate from nature or that we have a special purpose
god of the gaps
every time people could not explain something, they said god did it, lightning, disease, earthquakes and the stars were all once explained by religion, then science found real answers, as we learn more, the space where god is used as an explanation keeps getting smaller, saying god did it is not proof, it is just filling a gap in knowledge
religion as a way to control society
religion helped large groups of people follow the same rules and believe the same things, this made it much easier to build stable societies and keep order, when everyone believes the same story and follows the same moral code, they are easier to organise and there is less conflict, religion was one of the first systems used to do that
religion was made when we knew far less
most religions were created thousands of years ago, long before we understood evolution, space, genetics or how the brain works, today we can explain many things that people once believed were acts of god, religion is still popular because it gives people purpose and comfort, not because there is strong evidence that it is true
