religion gives people an answer to the biggest fear they have, death, people do not want to believe they simply stop existing, so they believe there is something after life, humans are animals just like every other animal, we have simply evolved further and became smart enough to ask questions about our own existence, that does not mean we are separate from nature or that we have a special purpose

every time people could not explain something, they said god did it, lightning, disease, earthquakes and the stars were all once explained by religion, then science found real answers, as we learn more, the space where god is used as an explanation keeps getting smaller, saying god did it is not proof, it is just filling a gap in knowledge

religion helped large groups of people follow the same rules and believe the same things, this made it much easier to build stable societies and keep order, when everyone believes the same story and follows the same moral code, they are easier to organise and there is less conflict, religion was one of the first systems used to do that


religion was made when we knew far less


most religions were created thousands of years ago, long before we understood evolution, space, genetics or how the brain works, today we can explain many things that people once believed were acts of god, religion is still popular because it gives people purpose and comfort, not because there is strong evidence that it is true

What happened to the west without religion? Without Christ? It fell apart. We need God, without divine oder or morals, we become just as pointless.

Only really applies to caveman like societies where they personified the forces of nature, things like the big bang theory for example were championed and formed by catholic priests, the concept of universities was founded by catholics and built up due to them, monks preserved foreign pagan religions in writing which is why we know so much about them while also developing and using a tradition of philosophy to justify and argue the existence of god even in the medieval times (thomas aquinas, the early church fatherse etc), pretending they played zero role in science or that they just used religion to explain away things is ridiculous and false

You could argue this abt atheism as well, it takes far more commitment and dedication to living a religious life than it does being an atheist, even most religious people fail to fully stand by their own standards, when you choose religion you are actively choosing a life that is far less comfortable and actively having to resist temptation and come to terms with your own faults in order to live up to religious standards



I'm an atheist but this sort of supremacy atheists hold over the religious is just completely unearned and ridiculous, its not unreasonable for someone to be a christian in the modern age and there is a big chunk of philosophy and metaphysics that argue the existance of god, biblical historical accuracy, jesus being historically real and etc.

Yes, also it's human nature to have something viewed as holy since the days of animism, religion evolved side by side throughout human civilization until it reached its complete viewpoint after hundreds of years of interconnection of societies.


Going against it would not prove to be anything of value, you will still be you but lacking the understanding of structures that many societies derive from religion such as law (partly constituted from already pre-established religious texts) and would make your life seem very pointless.

Another point would be atheists just take their deities to social/materialistic things (sex, money, drugs etc.) or even humans rather than any religious head, basically a complete enslavement in all parts of life with no motivator to call for self-control.
