Unlike other genetic disorders it isn't monogenic (the result of a singular heavy dysgenic mutation, usually autosomal dominant) which is why neurologists or geneticists can't seem to find the cause of autism or why it even manifests in the first place.

And the reason why there are a plethora of theories as to why autism exists is because
a) its polygenic
b) its a variation (extension) of a normal, otherwise healthy, human phenotypic expression

also its why people think having kids at a later age causes autism when in fact that's a side effect of the parents life history strategy. ie nerds are generally slow life k selected, so have kids later on in life -> offspring not only have a higher mutational load but also a high predisposition to pathological nerdism (autism) as both parents will be autistic adjacent, NERDS.

Is maternal age still a predictor of autism after paternal age is controlled for? If it is, then it’s definitely not just fully mutational load based since mutations accrue paternally.

Also, if autism is increasing between each cohort, it’s probably not a function of life history strategy. People with a slow life history strategy are straight up not having kids anymore. The gap between fast and slow life history strategies in terms of TFR is probably greater now than it has ever been before.

Personally, I think it’s probably mostly mutationally load but there’s a heavy psychosomatic component as well. Not sure about the vaccines stuff, but I wouldn’t be surprised if something about our diet or vaccination had something to do with it as well

in severe cases, most definitely.

point is, most if not all autistic symptoms are nerd characteristics (high iq, low eq, restricted interests, terrible dexterity, clumsiness) exacerbated to the max. realistically most 'nt' very smart people could be classified as an individual with aspergers or high functioning autism, they just don't need to be diagnosed with anything or considered mentally dysfunctional because their high iq enables them to get by.

if you want a smart populous, autistic (high functioning and low functioning) offspring will be an inevitable side effect.
