Tbf all jokes aside, they don’t look identical to actual Africans but they do look phenotypically close enough for them to be the same race even if they have a different phenotype overall

You are telling me that if we remove the hat, the durag, the Afro American mannerism, teach him how to speak Yoruba and pidgin, replace the cigar with a chewing stick, and put him in the middle of Lagos a morning just cleaning his teeth with the chewing stick, you would accurately identify him as black American man and not an African just off his face?

Yeah I agree this guy is an AA who is indistinguishable from nastier west African, though most black Americans don’t look phenotypically identical to west Africans the fact is they loook black and therefore the same race, the differences are small but if you see an AA and African side by side you can usually tell.
Why INSHALLAH ?

This American soccer player is of 100% Nigerian ancestry (Igbo) yet how many people would know he is Nigerian American instead of African American?

Igbos are a unique group in this regard though. They are known for bing lighter and looking more “mixed” on average but your standard west African that is not igbo or some other weird ass one off group won’t look identical to an AA

are they a mixed population like east africans? why is their skin so much lighter ?

Facial features are usually the only indicator of European heritage in African Americans. African Americans have overwhelmingly West African heritage so any Caucasoid features are due to European admixture rather than admixture from the Caucasoid dark East Africans who were not taken to America during the slave trade. I think Kobe Bryant and Tupac Shakur are good examples of this. They may look as dark as other African Americans and there will be West Africans with lighter skin but none will have European influenced facial features. The Noses of some African Americans are long, relatively narrow and turn up at the end this is a European trait, compare this to African Americans with more typical African features like Michael Jordan and Dr Dre.

Not all East Africans horners are mixed that’s specific to each tribe/clan and the % is 20-30% which doesn’t effect phenotype much their look is due to evolving in arid mountains and deserts it’s called Convergent evolution look it up. Well Afrocentrists claim they are of MENA ancestry (Jewish) but they just have a weird mutation that made them lighter and smarter due to environmental factors.

I can normally tell them apart easily, same for british curries vs fobs, but I also see your point if you made those changes it would defo be harder to tell him apart, if at all possible

Tupac's dad is interesting his side profile to me looks caucasoid.

Because you are not "black American" you are Somali with Semitic and Austronesian ancestry. Most black Americans have a completely different background so there is obviously a difference, but what we are talking is more in relation to the diaspora vs. people they descend from.

Africans and Caribbeans(some FOB looking) constantly infiltrate black American culture and media without ever getting caught. People just assume they are black American.
For example in Hip Hop, people had no idea Chamillionaire, Styles P, Wale, producer Sonny Digital, and others were not actually black Americans, and very few second guessed their origins.
They ALL pass for black Americans easily by adopting cultural elements, mannerism, and accent.

There is just something that screams "American" in the pic on the left.
I don't know if it's the long eyelashes, the showing of the teeth, the pink sweatshirt, the hand on the head, the way the makeup is done, the pose, or a combination of all of that that then equals to a perception of "American mannerism", but there is just something that screams "American" and it's not the actual facial features.
Meanwhile the right just looks like the kind of stock image you get when you google "African woman".

It's true Mid Western, Western, and Northern African Americans have more European ancestry than Southern ones, especially those who are of Geechee heritage.

Why? The paper actually explains why. It's based on migration patterns. tl;dr During the Great Migration, African Americans with more European ancestry initially had more opportunities to migrate to Northern cities
Time estimates point to admixture occurring when most ancestors to present-day African-Americans lived in the South. The regional differences in ancestry seen in Fig 1 are therefore unlikely to be caused by differences in recent admixture rates, and the large influx of migrants from the South would have strongly attenuated any earlier differences. An alternate explanation for regional differences in ancestry proportions is that individuals with higher European ancestry were more likely to migrate to the North and West during the Great Migration, a scenario we refer to as ancestry-biased migration.

To validate the ancestry-biased migration model, we compared ancestry proportions of HRS individuals according to their region of birth, residence, and migration status. European ancestry proportions in African-Americans who left the South (16.5%) is elevated compared to individuals who remained in the South (15.3%, bootstrap p = 0.04), confirming that ancestry-biased migrations continued at least to the mid-20th century. These migrants had substantially less European ancestry than African-Americans already established in the North (20.9%) and West (25.0%) (Fig 2E). Since the latter two groups received large contributions from the first wave of the Great Migration, this suggests that the proportion of European ancestry in first-wave migrants was higher than in the second wave—i.e., that there was stronger ancestry bias during the first wave of migration.

This change over time in ancestry-biased migration is consistent with historical accounts that southern African-American migrants to northern cities during the later stages of the Great Migration had darker complexion than North-born African-Americans (see [23], p. 179). The change could be explained by better social opportunities available to individuals with higher levels of European ancestry: Individuals with wealth and education were much more likely to migrate in the first wave of the migration

Chamillionaire's mom is black american so he counts.

Styles P's father is described as "Jamaican" but it also sounds like he was from Bed-Stuy, not Jamaica, and every other black New Yorker is Jamaican or Jamaican ancestry so I'd argue it still roughly counts just due to sheer numbers

Wale is big time African, even down to his real birth name, but I also feel like with a name like Wale people just assume he is anyway most of the time. I've never thought of Wale as being normal black american, I associate him more with outside of America types of shit

People hear "black Americans are on average 20% European" but refuse to actually understand the data.

They assume it means that most black Americans are 20% European, when all it means is that an average is 20% European. That could be caused by most of them being around 20% European, but it's not necessarily the case. It could also be caused by having a lot of variety with a lot of outliers that ends up skewing the average towards 20% even when most of them aren't 20% Euro, which is the actual reality :
According to DNA analysis led in 2006 by Penn State geneticist Mark D. Shriver, around 58 percent of African Americans have at least 12.5% European ancestry, 19.6 percent of African Americans have at least 25% European ancestry (equivalent to one European grandparent and his/her forebears), and 1 percent of African Americans have at least 50% European ancestry (equivalent to one European parent and his/her forebears)
Most black Americans are actually around 88.5-90% African, but because of their the diversity in their heritage the average is 20%.
This is admitting regional differences. In the Mid West and on the West Coast, most probably aren't 88.5% African. But overall most black Americans are around 88.5-90% African.

The lightskin Igbo thing is kind of a meme.
It's true many Igbos are light skinned. Moreso than among other people, and even slave traders noticed that during the AST so it's pre-colonial, pre-bleaching creams. But the vast majority of them are dark skinned.

Now the reason, I think it's climate. I could be totally wrong. Africans from very humid regions tend to produce more lighter skinned people. A lot of Congolese people are "light skin" as well with reddish-yellowish skin tone and not because of tchoko
