A similar thing happens here in NZ between Maori who are the indigenous people here arriving in approx 1300 A.D, and more recent Polynesian migrants. Some dislike when Maori are called polynesian as it negates the fact that Maori are the first inhabitants here and see it as a way for recent polynesian migrants to skirt the fact that they are migrants and no more native to NZ than a European while others would say they have the same issues as Maori and similar genetics along with there ancestors also having been colonised so why should it matter. I see this as being similar between African Americans who are descendants of slaves and recent African migrants to America who do not have this history. Maori are also on average 44% European while people from Tonga, Samoa and Fiji are almost entirely polynesian though Fiji has a large Indian community which also makes things complicated, for now they are counted as Indians and not Pacific peoples though some want this to be changed.

I can usually tell an African American, and African apart.
For Afro-Caribbeans, I can tell sometimes (especially if they're like Trini, Guyanese, or one of those exotic islands), but 90% of them usually go un-noticed as African Americans to me.
