New breakthrough experimental Oral drug BMB-01 (Bright Minds Biosciences) reaches phase-2 clinical trials.

BMB-101 works by targeting a specific receptor in the brain called the 5-HT₂C serotonin receptor. Serotonin is a chemical messenger that affects mood, appetite (Reducing your appetite), and brain activity. BMB-101 is not a stimulant. By carefully activating this specific receptor, BMB-101 aims to help calm abnormal brain activity that can lead to seizures. It also nearly doubles the amount of REM Sleep a person gets throughout the night, looking at a 90% Increase in REM Sleep (BioSpace, 2026).

Although BMB-101 looks promising, it is still being studied and has not yet been approved for public use. Many drugs seem successful in early testing but need more research to prove they are safe and effective in the long term.

How does this compare to something like agomelatine. They seem kinda similar despite doing basically completely opposite things.

They act on the same serotonin receptor (5-HT₂C) but in opposite ways.

• BMB-101 - Activates (stimulates) the 5-HT₂C receptor - calming excessive brain firing
• Agomelatine - Blocks the 5-HT₂C receptor - Used to treat depression and improve mood and sleep

They have similar affects but are used for different purposes since BMB-01 is also used to reduce seizures. I think the main difference is BMB-01 Calms the brain down and reduces activity while Agomelatine allows more dopamine activity.
