Braces retainer causing me to mouth breath

I’m having an issue where my retainer is very thick and causing me to mouth breath at night. It takes genuine effort to close my lips and my face is fatigued after a few hours. Even with tape it usually just comes off in the night. I have a permanent retainer wire behind my front teeth so I’m wondering if I should just ditch the plastic one cause a mouth breathing long face is worse than slightly crooked teeth.

If any of you have been in this situation before lmk what u did.
