1. INTRODUCTION

Energy drinks can get expensive as hell if you’re buying them constantly.

I say as i spend 400$ + every year on them :lul:

But most of what you’re paying for is just flavour + caffeine +electrolytes..

You don’t necessarily need some fancy €3 can every time you want something refreshing.

The important part is understanding what each ingredient actually does.

2. WHAT ACTUALLY GIVES YOU ENERGY

There are a few different things people mean when they say a drink gives them energy

Caffeine:

Caffeine mainly increases alertness.

It works by blocking adenosine receptors in the brain.

Adenosine is one of the chemicals involved in making you feel sleepy.

So caffeine basically makes the brain less responsive to that tiredness signal for a while.

That’s why you can feel more awake after having caffeine.

3. CAFFEINE AND YOUR BRAIN

Caffeine is probably the most important active ingredient in traditional energy drinks.

The effects can include

• increased alertness
• reduced perception of tiredness
• improved attention for some people
• increased stimulation

The effect can feel good because being more awake can make studying, gaming, training, writing guides or just doing basic daily tasks.

But more caffeine does NOT automatically mean more benefit.

Too much can cause:

• shakiness ( most common side effect I receive usually 1000mg+)
• anxiety
• headaches
• nausea
• racing heartbeat
• difficulty sleeping

For teenagers especially, caffeine intake should be kept low and energy drinks are generally not recommended.

That’s why this guide isn’t giving supplement doses or high caffeine recipes

4. SUGAR AND CARBOHYDRATES

Sugar gets blamed for basically everything but carbohydrates can be useful.

Your body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose.

Glucose is an important fuel source for the brain and muscles.

A sugary drink can therefore provide quickly available carbs, this can be useful when someone hasn’t eaten for a while.

Water plus food is usually a better everyday setup than relying on sugary drinks for energy.

5. ELECTROLYTES

Electrolytes are minerals that carry electrical charges in the body

Important examples include

Sodium

Helps with fluid balance and nerve and muscle function, you need it, but shouldn't like it since it bloats you, super water :lul:.

Potassium

Important for nerve signals and normal muscle function, we like potassium.

Magnesium

Involved in hundreds of biochemical reactions including processes related to energy metabolism and muscle function.

Sports drinks use electrolytes because sweating causes the body to lose water and electrolytes.

For normal everyday situations you usually don’t need some crazy electrolyte formula. Food already provides plenty of these minerals.

6. WHY CAN AN ENERGY DRINK MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD

This is where the combination matters

You might get:

caffeine → increased alertness

carbohydrate → available glucose

flavour/sweetness → enjoyable sensory experience

fluid → hydration

electrolytes → support normal fluid and nerve/muscle function

There is also the psychological effect

If you associate a cold fizzy drink with studying gaming training or going outside your brain can start associating the drink with that activity

So the experience itself can make you feel more motivated

7. CHEAP DRINK COMBINATIONS

You don’t need complicated recipes

OPTION 1

Cold water + fruit

Orange lemon lime berries or whatever you already have

Basically cheap flavoured water

good form of glucose

OPTION 2

Full sugar electolyte drinks

help quickly restore vital minerals and fluids los

OPTION 3

Caffeine capsules

fruit juices ex: orange juice, apple juice ect

OPTION 4

Coffee

sugar, milk

OPTION 5

simple energy drinks ex:

Monster, Redbull, celcius, and more

8. STORE BOUGHT OPTIONS

If you want something that tastes like an actual energy drink without spending loads

Look for

• supermarket own brand drinks
• smaller cans
• reduced sugar versions
• sparkling water
• iced tea
• basic sports drinks when you actually need electrolytes

The cheapest option is usually comparing the price per litre rather than the price of one can

A €1 drink can actually be more expensive than a €1.50 drink if the first one is much smaller

9. THINGS PEOPLE MISUNDERSTAND

"Energy drinks create energy"

Wrong.

Caffeine mainly changes alertness and fatigue perception

"Electrolytes automatically give you energy"

Wrong again.

Electrolytes are mainly important for fluid balance and normal nerve and muscle function

"More caffeine means more focus"

Wrong once again.

Once caffeine gets excessive the side effects can outweigh the useful effects

"Sugar is the same thing as caffeine"

Your fucking retarded.

Sugar provides carbohydrate

Caffeine is a stimulant that affects the nervous system. They work through completely different mechanisms, similar result.

10. CAFFEINE SAFETY

Caffeine can affect sleep even when you don’t feel obviously tired, don't take it 10 hours before bed. Poor sleep can completely defeat the purpose of trying to feel more energetic the next day. If you’re under 18 it’s especially worth avoiding high caffeine energy drinks and caffeine supplements. The boring answer is genuinely the useful one here.

DNR THAT

11. FINAL THOUGHTS

You don’t need some expensive energy drink every day. The main things behind the feeling are pretty simple

Caffeine affects alertness ---> Carbohydrates provide fuel ---> Water supports hydration --->Electrolytes support normal body functions

That's all you need to know.

And flavour makes the whole thing more enjoyable. Understanding what’s actually inside the drink is way more useful than blindly buying whatever can has the craziest marketing, you know who I'm talking about.

Cheap doesn’t automatically mean ineffective.

Sometimes you’re literally paying extra for a cool can.

I feel it's one the more unique addictions

As it is expected from all those who consume it that they will eventually be dependent on it to wake up, and yet it's treated very normally

I drink a lot of it, but I feel my energy levels would be maybe not higher all the time, but significantly more stable without any drugs including caffeine

Btw I typed this while shitting and I stunk it up in here.
