Can a retainer make me recessed?

I don't have to wear braces anymore, but my orthodontist told me that I have to wear some type of retainer. I think it is a Hawley retainer, but I'm not sure. It makes me unable to mew at night (I have to wear it all night), and I see that because of that I breathe with my mouth, so can it make me recessed? She told me that I have to wear it every night for at least two years, but for the next 1-2 years I will have to wear it, but not every night.
