Starting using a random spf50 a while ago and all it did is make my skin lighter

Probably it won't darken your skin, if anything the opposite, unless you're getting a very bad SPF which doesn't do it's function on which case it can darken you, but that's only because it isn't doing it's work, the actual source of the darkening would be the sun. But it can definately cause acne.
